I was listening to a Mind Pump podcast this morning and came across a powerful, interesting tip for fat loss that I believe everyone should try:
EAT YOUR PROTEIN FIRST.
This straightforward strategy involves eating your protein (like meat) first, which triggers strong satiety signals. Follow this with vegetables—especially non-starchy ones—that provide fiber and are low in calories.
By prioritising these foods, your appetite is significantly reduced, helping you avoid overeating later.
Here’s what happens: by starting with protein and fiber, you feel fuller quicker and are less likely to overconsume calories, particularly from carbs or junk food. In fact, many people (not all—there can be exceptions!) might end up consuming 300-400 fewer calories a day just by making this small change, without needing to alter anything else about what they’re eating.
This method is rooted in both physiology and psychology. By changing the order of consumption, you’re not denying yourself the foods you crave but instead prioritizing the more satiating and nutrient-dense parts of the meal. It also helps increase your protein intake, which is often lacking in many diets, and promotes fat loss while building muscle—especially when paired with strength training (you can read my other blogs on this!).
This simple habit can be especially effective for those with higher body fat, leading to significant fat loss without the need for restrictive dieting.
